What are parasites?

A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism, at the expense of the host organism. Here is a brief description of a few of the known types of parasites:

Bacteria can be present in almost anything. Here are some examples: Shigella species are frequently in pasteurized milk and cause intestinal, muscle and joint problems. Salmonella species are frequently in pasteurized milk and raw eggs and poultry, and cause food poisoning.

E-Coli can also be found in foods. Staphylococcus epidermidis is very difficult to kill and causes sinus and skin infections. Streptococcus pneumoniae often causes ear, sinus, throat, and bronchial infections. Borellia burgdorferi causes Lymeâs Disease. It spends part of its cycle inside the nerve cells. There are also two different species of bacterias that are called nano-bacterias and Spirochetes.

Flukes are leaf shaped, thin worms with a bilaterally symmetrical body and hooks or cup shaped suckers. They have both male and female organs in each individual. They have a simple digestive tract and complex life cycles with two or more hosts, usually one of which is a mollusk. Some examples are: Fasiolopsis buski, Fasciola hepatica, Eurytrema pancreaticum.

Fungi is multi cellular- with long filaments/spores, that can live on the skin, under nails and inside tumors and tissues. Ringworm is a fungus of the skin. There is also mildew, molds and slime molds.

Microzymas can be formed by the body from other types of parasites, or caught from others as a microzyma. They can also morph into cysts, tumors and foreign cells.

Morgons can be caught as a morgon or can become a morgon from being morphed from other types of parasites. They can produce a threadlike fiber that can sometimes come out through the skin. There is a disease called Morgellonâs Disease, associated with this type of parasite.

Mycoplasmas are a crystalline bacterial toxin associated with the Brucella bacterium. They are sometimes found in chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Gulf War illness, AIDS, and related diseases. It can be delivered via insects, aerosol, the food chain, or caught from contact with other infected persons.

Prions are an incorrectly folded protein that are treated as a parasite because of the damage they do. They can get into the cells and cause holes in the brain. This is the leading cause of Alzheimerâs and Mad Cow diseases.

Protozoas are a single cell animal and have very complex life cycles. Some examples are:

Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis species, and Giardia lamblia. There are also three other types of protozoas called Amoebas, Nematodes and Somatodes.

Viruses and Warts â Viruses can cause serious illness. Adenovirus causes the common cold. Respiratory syncytial virus causes respiratory problems. Influenza virus causes flu. There are many other types of viruses. Warts are colonies of several species of viruses.

Worms can be several types of worms, such as Flat, Pin, Round, Thread. Roundworms are elongated, cylindrical worms with well developed digestive tracts. Most species are free living but a large number of species parasitize humans, animals, and plants. In humans, there are both intestinal and tissue inhabiting species. Some species are thorny-headed worms, equipped with hooks to help attach itself to the intestinal wall. Their digestive tract is absent. Some examples are: Ascaris lumbricoides, Pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Trichinella spiralis.

Tapeworms have an elongated ribbon-like body, with a specialized attachment organ called a scolex on the anterior end. They contain both male and female organs. They have no digestive tract and attach themselves to the inside of the small intestine, or other organs, and absorb nutrients directly into their bodies. Immature tapeworms invade tissues and encyst themselves there. Most require at least two hosts. Some examples are: Diphyllobothrium latum, Echinococcus granulosus, taenia solium.

Tongue Worms can be anywhere in the body, not just the tongue. They are so named for their shape like a tongue, not because they are in the tongue. They are serious and can also cause many problems. They can also morph into other types of parasites.

Yeasts are species of single cells that divide, and parasitize humans. Candida albacans is one of many species.

Factors that contribute to the growing parasite epidemic include the widespread use of drugs that suppress our immune systems. An imbalance of good to bad bacteria in the colon is also a contributing factor. Some other factors include wide use of antibiotics, eating refined carbohydrates, steroid drugs, X-rays and radiation therapy, chlorinated water, stress, low fiber diet, pollution, poor digestions and elimination, and mercury toxicity from dental fillings.

The increase in world travel by tourists, armed forces and immigrants spreads every possible parasite everywhere. The increase in synthetic toxins within the body is changing the life cycles of some species making many parasitology textbooks inadequate. Our changes in lifestyles have increased the spread of parasites all over the world. Increased use of nurseries and other child care facilities increase exposure. Increased eating in restaurants contributes to less control over parasite contamination. Increased consumption of ethnic foods exposes us to a wider variety of species. Increased world travel exposes more people to a wide variety of species for which they have no natural immunity. Increased levels of stress in modern day living lowers our immunity. Increased sexual promiscuity and homosexuality increases exposure. And certain modern medical practices increase the probability of parasitic infection by compromising the patientâs natural immune defenses. Examples are surgery, blood transfusions, incubation, and prolonged hospitalization.

Today it is apparent that 98% of all diseases are caused by parasites and/or toxins. They can affect tissue anywhere in the body. Because they can get into the blood and travel to any organ, parasites cause problems that are not often recognized as parasite-related. For example, a roundworm infestation in the stomach can give the appearance of a peptic ulcer. Parasitic insects Most insect parasitoids are wasps or flies. Parasitiods comprise a diverse range of insects that lay their eggs on or in the body of an insect host, which is then used as a food for developing larvae. Parasitic wasps take much longer than predators to consume their victims, for if the larvae were to eat too fast they would run out of food before they became adults. Such parasites are very useful in the organic garden, for they are very efficient hunters, always at work searching for pest invaders. As adults they require high energy fuel as they fly from place to place, and feed upon nectar, pollen and sap, therefore planting plenty of flowering plants, particularly buckwheat, umbellifers, and composites will encourage their presence. Four of the most important groups are: Ichneumonid wasps: (5-10 mm). Prey mainly on caterpillars of butterflies and moths. Braconid wasps: Tiny wasps (up to 5 mm) attack caterpillars and a wide range of other insects including greenfly. A common parasite of the cabbage white caterpillar- seen as clusters of sulphur yellow cocoons bursting from collapsed caterpillar skin. Chalcid wasps: Among the smallest of insects (<3 mm). Parasitize eggs/larvae of greenfly, whitefly, cabbage caterpillars, scale insects and strawberry tortrix moth. Tachinid flies: Parasitize a wide range of insects including caterpillars, adult and larval beetles, true bugs, and others. Plants to regulate insect pests Choosing a diverse range of plants for the garden can help to regulate pests in a variety of ways, including; Masking the crop plants from pests, depending on the proximity of the companion or intercrop. Producing olfactory inhibitors, odors that confuse and deter pests. Acting as trap plants by providing an alluring food that entices pests away from crops. Serving as nursery plants, providing breeding grounds for beneficial insects. Encarsia formosa Most of the biological controls listed above depend on providing incentives in order to ‘naturally’ attract beneficial insects to the garden. However there are occasions when biological controls can be directly introduced. Common biocontrol agents include parasitoids, predators, pathogens or weed feeders. This is particularly appropriate in situations such as the greenhouse, a largely artificial environment, and are usually purchased by mail order. Some biocontrol agents that can be introduced include; Encarsia formosa. This is a small predatory chalcid wasp which is parasitical on whitefly, a sap-feeding insect which can cause wilting and black sooty moulds. It is most effective when dealing with low level infestations, giving protection over a long period of time. The wasp lays its eggs in young whitefly ‘scales’, turning them black as the parasite larvae pupates. It should be introduced as soon as possible after the first adult whitefly are seen. Should be used in conjunction with insecticidal soap. Red spider mite, another pest found in the greenhouse, can be controlled with the predatory mite Phytoseilus persimilis. This is slightly larger than its prey and has an orange body. It develops from egg to adult twice as fast as the red spider mite and once established quickly overcomes infestation. A fairly recent development in the control of slugs is the introduction of ‘Nemaslug’, a microscopic nematode (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) which will seek out and Parasitize slugs, reproducing inside them and killing them. The nematode is applied by watering onto moist soil, and gives protection for up to six weeks in optimum conditions, though is mainly effective with small and young slugs under the soil surface. A bacterial biological control which can be introduced in order to control butterfly caterpillars is Bacillus thuringiensis. This available in sachets of dried spores which are mixed with water and sprayed onto vulnerable plants such as brassicas and fruit trees. The bacterial disease will kill the caterpillars, but leave other insects unharmed. There are strains of Bt that are effective against other insect larvae. Bt israelensis is effective against mosquito larvae and some midges. A biological pest control being developed for use in the treatment of plant disease is the fungus Trichoderma viride. This has been used against Dutch Elm disease, and to treat the spread of fungal and bacterial growth on tree wounds. It may also have potential as a means of combating silver leaf disease. The parasitoid Gonatocerus ashmeadi (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) has been introduced to control the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca vitripennis (Hemipterae: Cicadellidae) in French Polynesia and has successfully controlled ~95% of the pest density

Ladybugs are very active and hence they are cooled off in a fridge to make them less active and hence prevent them from disappearing out of the garden itself. They stick better in moist soil. Even as larvae, they can eat hundred of aphids a day. Fly parasites are tiny flies which do not sting or bite and live entirely off pupa or larva of the pests. They are natural predators of the most common pests like house flies, stable flies, horn flies and face flies. Decaying organic matter where pests usually thrive is also the environment where fly parasites can be found in great number, thus preventing the very growth of the pests. Beneficial nematodes can prey on as many as 250 different species of pests. Maggots, worms and fleas are common prey to these nematodes which usually hunt underground. Get Rid of Flies

Flies are winged insects that come in various sizes and of which there are literally thousands of different species. Flies represent a hazard to human health as many of them carry a number of diseases so it’s important that we deal with them and deal with them effectively.

The presence of flies in any establishment is associated with poor hygiene and consequently, they are particularly unwelcome in restaurants and food outlets or anywhere that food is being prepared or consumed, including in the home. Electric fly killers can be an excellent method of control, particularly in places where flies are inclined to keep coming back, for example, anywhere that food is likely to be exposed for any length of time. It might help if you can recognise common flies and what they are looking for. Some of the more well known types are as follows:

The common housefly (Musca domestica)

A very common type of fly that can travel significant distances to find a suitable place to feed, their flight range is a staggering 8 kilometres at least. As the cycle from eggs to adult is rather rapid, these flies can become a major problem in a very short space of time if not dealt with effectively. In appropriate conditions, the adult female fly will lay her eggs, around 100 at a time, on old and rotting food and organic debris. The eggs then hatch in a matter of hours, the larvae will feed for about a week before entering the pupa stage and the adult fly emerges a few days later to start the cycle all over again. A housefly cannot eat solid food so when it lands on your plate, it vomits part of its stomach contents on to your food to soften it, and then it stamps it in to break the food down and liquefy it so that it can suck it up. During this process it can also deposit a number of germs.

Bluebottles or Blowflies (Calliphora sp) and Greenbottles (Lucila sp)

These are much larger than the common housefly and as the names imply, have a distinctive metallic blue or green colour. They also make quite a loud buzzing noise when flying around. Again, when found indoors, these are associated with poor hygiene or poor refuse control, or in severe cases, the presence of a dead rat, bird, mouse or other animal lying undetected somewhere. There cycle is similar to that of the housefly but they are different in that their eggs are laid in dead animal matter or animal faeces. Unwrapped or uncovered meat, chicken and fish can attract these flies.

Fruit flies

Fruit flies are small yellowish or brownish flies that are attracted to alcohol so can be found in places where there is rotting fruit or fruit peelings. These flies can be present in large numbers so are annoying and are associated once again with poor hygiene although they are not thought to be harmful to health.

Cluster Flies (Pollenis rudis)

These look similar in appearance to the common housefly but are generally outdoor flies and prefer to feed off earthworms rather than food. They tend to be found indoors hibernating in large numbers in little used rooms such as attics and basements where they have entered in order to escape the cold. If the weather warms up a bit then they can start flying around which can be unpleasant due to the fact that there are so many of them congregating together at once.

Fly Control

An electric fly killer is a highly effective ongoing method of fly control. It works by attracting the flies to the apparatus and then zapping them. These can be particularly useful in food establishments or anywhere that flies are likely to be recurring problem.

However, it also helps if you take steps to deter them from entering the premises in the first place.

- Wash bins regularly and keep lids closed at all times

- Never leave food lying around unwrapped and exposed to the open air

- Clean up spillages, crumbs and left over food immediately

- Don’t leave pet food lying in dishes for longer than necessary

- Use fly screens, particularly during hot weather
